\"\"You may have heard the story of the scholar who visited the saint.\u00a0 <\/span>The scholar was eager to gain favour and impress the saint with everything he knew.\u00a0 <\/span>After a while, the saint suggested they have some tea and began to fill the scholar\u2019s cup to the brim, and continued to pour so that the tea spilled over onto the table.. and continued to pour so that the tea started to drip off the table onto the floor\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Eventually the scholar shouted \u201cstop!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The cup is overflowing! You can\u2019t add any more!\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s full!\u201d \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cExactly\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>said the saint.<\/p>\n

This fable fells very apt for the journey I\u2019m about to embark on. \u00a0 <\/span>This week I head away for my third full Yoga Teacher training.\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, yes, yes I\u2019m very lucky and very greedy\u2026..My third!! And therein lies potentially my biggest challenge (well, at least part of it). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a certain amount of experience and knowledge from previous trainings and from my 8 years of teaching Yoga.\u00a0 <\/span>Some would say that is a huge advantage.\u00a0 <\/span>For sure, in many ways it is.\u00a0 <\/span>But my challenge is to empty the cup.\u00a0 <\/span>To let go of what I think I know.\u00a0 <\/span>To be open to new ways of doing things. To be a good student. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When we think we already know something we might have a tendency to \u2018switch off\u2019\u00a0 <\/span>or may\"\"be we feel the need to show others how clever we are.\u00a0 <\/span>I can think of times when I have done both..\u00a0 <\/span>So for this training. I need to find a balance between being receptive to new information, new ways of doing things and staying true to me.\u00a0 <\/span>I need to navigate the line between humility and arrogance.<\/p>\n

In many ways it\u2019s a huge relief to be able to \u2018let go\u2019 and be the student for a change.\u00a0 <\/span>But I also recognise it\u2019s going to require some \u2018ego management\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span>I need to be really willing not to know and not to just pretend not to know with a smug smile!\u00a0 <\/span>I need to be willing to fail, to be the one that gets it wrong, to be the one in a sweaty, crumpled heap.\u00a0 <\/span>Compassionately quieting the self judging voice that will undoubtedly be saying \u201c You should know this!\u00a0 <\/span>You should be able to do this!\u00a0 <\/span>Call yourself a Yoga Teacher?!\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is also important to recognise what I do know and to allow my experience be of support and encouragement to others. This is harder for me. It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t want to help.\u00a0 <\/span>Its that I\u2019m afraid to appear to be a \u2018know it all\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m afraid to seem egotistical.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m afraid of what people might think!! (Urghhhh!!!\u00a0 <\/span>Still?!!!\u00a0 <\/span>After all I preach about truth and authenticity\u2026 Yup!\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s still a part of me in certain settings that can be over concerned with other\u2019s opinions of me.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means the easy option for me is to sit at the back of the room take notes and keep quiet.\u00a0 <\/span>But, wouldn\u2019t it be selfish of me not to contribute if I can offer support? Isn\u2019t that even more egotistical?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Packing my baggage<\/h5>\n

Those of you that know me also know that however many times I am blessed to travel\u2026 and I have been very blessed with lots of lovely travel in the last few years\u2026. my packing skills remain\u2026 ummm\u2026 crap! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Luckily the \u2018baggage\u2019 I\u2019m referring to here is my mental baggage.\u00a0 <\/span>Creating\u00a0 <\/span>mental state and setting intentions for which of my qualities I want to bring with me\u2026 and here I can travel light\u2026<\/p>\n
